October 14 Happy Birthday to Former Tigers or Detroit Wolverines

Erik Sabel was a right handed reliever for the Tigers in 2002.  Erik had spent part of 1999 and 2001 with the Arizona Diamondbacks.  The Tigers picked him up off of waivers on July24 of 2002.  Four days later Erik came in from the bullpen to start the 8th inning against the Indians in a game Mark Redman stated and was ahead 6-2.  Erik faced Omar Vizquel to start the inning.  Omar hit an 0-1 pitch for a home run.  He then had Ellis Burks coming up.  Ellis hit a 2-0 pitch for a double to deep left.  Julio Santana came in to replace Erik.  Julio gave up a single to Jim Thome and scored Ellis.  That was the extent of Erik’s experience with the Tigers.  He was sent down to Toledo for the rest of the season and was granted free agency at the end of the season.  He signed with Tampa Bay but never played in the majors again.

Vincent Maney played nine seasons in the low minors before becoming a Tiger.  He had not played since 1909.  But on May 18, 1912 he made his major league debut as a shortstop in Philadelphia against the Athletics.  This was the famous, or rather infamous, Ty Cobb suspension /Tiger strike game.  At plate Vincent went 0-2 with a walk and a HBP to give him .500 on base percentage.    In the field Vincent had six chances.  He made three pout outs and two assists and committed one error.  He also took part in one double play.  Like the other Tiger players of that game, Vincent was done in baseball after that day.  He died ten years later at the age of 36 having never had a major league hit.
