May 31 Happy Birthday to Former Tigers or Detroit Wolverines

Dupee Shaw was a left handed pitcher for the Wolverines in 1883 and 1884.  He was the number two pitcher on the 1883 staff behind Stump Wiedman.  Dupee, whose real name was Frederick Lander, was 10-15 his first year with the Wolverines and 9-18 his second year.  He jumped ship part way through the 1884 season to play closer to home in Massachusetts and joined the Boston Reds of the Union Association.  This was a time when teams would steal another player from another team especially if they were in another league.  He came back to the National League when in 1885 he joined the Providence Grays.  He finished his major league career in 1888 after playing 3 seasons with the Nationals of Washington.  He continued to try to earn a living in baseball in the minors and was found still pitching as late as 1896 with Lancaster of the Atlantic League.

Joe Farrell went through life without a known birthday but is known to have been born in 1857.  He was playing with the Detroit Wolverines in 1882, the season after the gunfight at that OK Corral.  He hit .247 that season as the Wolverines starting third baseman.  His batting average was third best only behind Charlie Bennett and George Wood on the team.  He held the role of third baseman for two more seasons with Detroit hitting .243 and .226 before ending his major league career with the Baltimore Orioles in 1886.  He was still playing in the minors in 1888, five years before he died in 1893 at the approximate age of 36 reportedly from rheumatism and malaria.
